Movie #30

30 (06/06/2011) – Your favourite movie of all time

I don’t really have an all time favourite movie. I can think of quite a few that I’d watch over and over again, but none that I’d pick straight off the bat. As most of you know, I love Star Wars and I love Lord of the Rings, there’s no refuting that they’re both amazing sagas, and I love a lot of other movies too, but I just don’t know. I think at this point I’m going to default to Pan’s Labyrinth, because it really is amazing in terms of storyline, soundtrack, acting and overall outcome. It’s terrifically dark, spectacularly sadistic in parts and just.. brilliant. Really, really brilliant.

Also, eyes in hand guy still creeps me out. A lot.

29 (05/06/2011) – Favourite film from my childhood

I watched this movie 6 times at the cinema. I own the soundtrack on tape (yes, it’s that old and I was that young when it came out that CDs don’t exist). On a side note, I’ve been looking for this movie’s soundtrack on CD on and off for YEARS. I guess that you could say this is my ‘go to Disney movie’ but really, are there any specific Disney movies that you can watch over and over again? I could watch any of them over and over again, but maybe that’s just me.

Anyway, my favourite film from my childhood? The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

So, I was thinking a couple of nights ago – we all know that’s potentially bad for myself and the world, but I did it anyway – and I took a couple of minutes to contemplate this blog. It was meant, primarily, to be a catalogue of my life at Disneyworld, but now it’s turned into a series of 30 day challenges as, well, unfortunately I’m no longer working at Disney. I really wish I was, but nothing on Earth short of US citizenship at this point is going to change that.

So, it’s gone from Disney, to a mild contemplation of my dislike for Paris and it’s dog poop, to a series of 30 day challenges which has lead me here, 2 days out from the end of the third challenge, 4 days out from my departure for a 10 day Mediterranean Cruise (with Disney), 24 days out from my departure from France, and 37 days until I’m finally back home in Dunedin.

Now, the 30 day challenge came from something to do with Lent. Which is Catholic, which I have nothing to do with. Except having a lapsed Catholic as a boyfriend. And I’m not even sure on that lapsed bit – he might never have practised – but I do remember a conversation about baptism, and I lost on that one. I wasn’t even christened, so in terms of getting into heaven I’m kind of screwed on those two counts – but then again I never really believed that a couple of drops of water on my head, or a dunk in an oversized bath hidden under a church stage (that’s how it was at my last church) were going to save me. If anything, it’ll be Faith that saves me, and I’m not really sure where I stand on that – but it’s closer to believing than non-believing, so we’ll leave it at that.

In any case, I was thinking about the challenges. Now, for my part it was an attempt to actually kick start myself into doing actual blogs on this site. After all, that was why I set it up. For the most part, it’s worked, but it’s also made me confront things in a strange kind of way. I’m the kind of person who doesn’t really like to take a stand on things (especially politics, things like the death penalty etc), but I’m surrounded by people who let me know what their opinion is – generally inadvertently, but they let me know. I like fence sitting – it gives me the chance to abstain in conversations where I feel uncomfortable or out of my depth, but it also allows me to look at both sides of the topic without too much bias – and I think I do it quite aptly.

What have I learnt most from this whole challenge thing, though? Well, I’ve learnt that I can make a decision and not really care about what other people think. Granted it’s only about movies, songs and photos, but I think I could get used to making decisions solely based on what I think and not what others around me think. It’s not that I operate under peer influence all the time, but I have in some major areas of my life, and I think maybe, just maybe, it’s time I struck out for myself. We’ll see how things go, huh?

28 (04/06/2011) – Favourite movie from your favorite director

I’m going to confess here and say I don’t really follow directors. I go in for what the movie’s about more than the person who stood behind the scenes and told everybody else what to do. The end product is what matters to me, not the process, and in the case of movies the end part is a result of everybody’s collaboration not just one person. So as a result, I don’t really care about that person. No offence to any directors out there.

I’m going to randomly put Michael Bay out there because he’s one of the few directors whose names I actually know, mainly because he apparently likes blowing things up. Well, Mr. Bay, I think you do an exceptional job at blowing things up, and I loved Transformers. I await the next installment with baited breath.

25 (01/06/2011) – The most hilarious film you have seen

The Hangover. Closely followed by Month Python and the Holy Grail.

26 (02/06/2011) – A movie you love but everyone else hates

I wouldn’t say people hate this movie, per se, it’s just not to a lot of people’s tastes that I know..

27 (03/06/2011) – A movie that you wish you had seen in theaters

Umm.. I’m going to go with Boondock Saints on this one. Great movie, but I wouldn’t mind seeing it on a massive screen.

22 (29/05/2011) – Favourite Action movie

Oh man.. this one’s a hard one. Anyone who knows me knows that I watch (and love) a lot of Action movies. I grew up watching all the old ones with my Dad, so we’ve watched quite a few over the years and that only makes my selection harder..! I honestly don’t think I can narrow this choice down, so I’m going to go with my top 3.

1. Casino Royale (amaaaazing + Daniel Craig)
2. Judge Dredd/Demolition Man (gotta have a bit of Stallone in your life, but I can’t decide which of these two I like best!)
3. Top Gun (goes without saying, really..!)

23 (30/05/2011) – Favourite Documentary

Hmm.. I’m going to go with Restrepo on this one. It’s a documentary about American soldiers in Afghanistan, but it’s done really well. It’s all about them being in one of the hottest zones and building a new base, trying to get along with Afghanis etc.

24 (31/05/2011) – Favourite Animation

Easy – Howl’s Moving Castle!!

Movies #20 & #21

20 (27/05/2011) – Favorite movie from your favourite actor

Hmm. Phantom Menace – Hayden Christensen.

21 (28/05/2011) – Favourite movie from your favourite actress

This one’s a little more awkward, as I don’t really have a favourite actress. I guess I could go with Natalie Portman and re-use the above movie, but that feels a little too much like cheating for me. I think for this one I’m going to go with Helen Mirren and what I thought was her absolutely amazing performance in The Queen. Also think she did a pretty good job in Red!
